 Potpourri Making Safety Tips

Here are some potpourri making safety tips to consider:

  • Make sure you can identify any leaves, fruit or flowers you collect fresh in case you pick something that causes a skin reaction.
  • When making potpourri, keep any equipment separate from food utensils. For example a plastic tub can be ideal for mixing the oil and flowers, but don’t then put it back in the kitchen cupboard, even if it has been washed, as the oil may linger.
  • Don’t allow the oils to touch your skin. Even natural essential oils can be too strong for your skin to cope with. Either wear protective vinyl / plastic / rubber gloves or use a dropper – preferably both! Most small essential oil bottles come with an integral dropper, but home fragrance oils don’t always.
  • Respect the safety instructions on the oil bottles and dispose of any unused oil responsibly.
  • Be aware of allergies, for example some people may be sensitive to lavender.
  • Keep the finished potpourri and any ingredients out of reach of children, who may mistake them for food. This is particularly likely with dried fruit or sweet fragrances!
  • Do be aware that pets sometimes explore their environment using their mouth.
  • Avoid contact of the oils or finished potpourri with polished, painted or synthetic surfaces and be aware that they may mark textiles.
