Potpourri Making – Quick Method

Modern potpourri making

Here is a quick method for potpourri making! Traditionally potpourri was made using essential oils, but this could be a little time consuming and fiddly due to the need for a fixative. A fixative stops the oil evaporating straightaway.

A modern short cut in potpourri making is to use ready-made home fragrance oils instead of essential oils. Fragrance oils do not require a fixative as they have been manufactured to provide a good fragrance over a long period of time.

You will need:

  • Potpourri base – dried flowers, petals, leaves, pods, dried fruit etc
  • Home fragrance oils (not essential oils)
  • Something to mix them in e.g. old tupperware

If you are using this method, then just shake all your dried flowers / potpourri ingredients in a plastic bag or old plastic tub with a few drops of oil and leave to stand for a few hours to permeate.

We make most of our handmade potpourri at daisyshop.co.uk using this method, albeit on a larger scale! We tend to make ours in small batches a couple of kilos at a time.

In the main picture above and the one below it, you can see our Sunshine Citrus potpourri. We make this using lemon and lime home fragrance oils for a zingy scent!

When you make your potpourri, you will need to take some safety considerations into account
