The role of orris root powder in potpourri making
Orris root powder is used in traditional potpourri making recipes to “fix” the fragrance. If the fragrance is not fixed, the essential oils which provide the perfume will soon evaporate away, leaving only a pretty bowl of dried flowers with no scent.
We sell orris root powder at 50g for £3.49.
Other potpourri fixatives include cinnamon powder and cinnamon sticks, cloves, chamomile flowers, gum benzoin, coriander and cumin seeds, so the choice of fixative depends on which dried flowers / fruits / herbs / spices are already in your recipe.
Orris root powder is a good, unobtrusive all-rounder in pot pourri making.
N.B. If you are making potpourri with home fragrance oils rather than essential oils, fixatives are not required.
